Time Out South Africa Taps Award-Winning Comedian to Build Sports Content Pipeline

Rory Petzer, comedian and storyteller with multiple Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards to his name, has joined Time Out South Africa as Culture Connector for sport, a role built around translating the country’s sporting moments into content that reaches both local and global audiences.

The appointment lands as Time Out South Africa actively expands its editorial partnerships with locally embedded creators. The brand’s strategy is straightforward: recruit voices that genuinely understand their cities, then let them work. Petzer’s track record, built on in-car observations, sold-out comedy shows and MC work, fits that brief. He also holds a DStv Content Creator Award, and the loyal following he has cultivated reflects an ability to find comedy in the textures of everyday South African life.

Aisha Mohamed, Managing Director of Time Out South Africa, framed the collaboration as part of a broader push to widen how the platform tells stories about South African cities. “Sport is such a powerful part of our culture, it brings people together, creates shared moments and tells us so much about who we are,” she said. “Rory understands how to tell those stories in a way that is accessible, entertaining and deeply connected to the audience.”

That connection to audience is precisely what Time Out is buying. The brand’s editorial model depends on creators who can serve as entry points, giving readers a way into the people, places and experiences defining contemporary South African culture rather than simply cataloguing them from a distance.

Petzer, for his part, described the fit as instinctive. “This just feels right. His first contribution will form part of a sports-focused series on the platform. The debut feature looks ahead to the Springboks’ third Test against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, 5 September, a fixture that will test whether the new editorial partnership can deliver the kind of culturally grounded coverage the brand is promising.
