GQEBERHA — South Africa’s electric mobility ambitions came into sharp operational focus at the uYilo e-Mobility Summit 2026, held at Nelson Mandela University last week, where officials and industry leaders pressed a single urgent point: research and policy frameworks mean little without functioning factories, trained workers and working infrastructure.
The summit assembled government representatives, industrial operators, academic researchers, development partners and technology developers to map practical steps for accelerating electric mobility deployment and anchoring South Africa’s participation in emerging battery and vehicle value chains. The gathering underscored a critical operational reality: the country possesses the mineral resources, research capacity and industrial foundation needed to compete in battery production and electric vehicle manufacturing, but only if innovation translates into commercial scale.
Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Nomalungelo Gina framed the challenge as one of execution and timing. “The question before us is not whether electric mobility will happen. The question is whether South Africa will capture value from it,” she said. “We have the minerals, the research capability, the industrial base and the policy instruments needed to participate meaningfully in the green economy.”
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has anchored its green transition strategy on two pillars: the hydrogen economy and the battery economy. To operationalize this framework, government is funding the Energy Storage Research, Development and Innovation Programme, which supports technology development, intellectual property creation and skills training across the lithium-ion battery supply chain.
A concrete implementation milestone came from a strategic partnership between the University of Limpopo and the Manganese Metal Company. The collaboration has achieved pilot-scale production of battery-grade manganese sulphate derived from locally sourced manganese ore and locally developed, publicly funded intellectual property. That work advances mineral beneficiation by converting mined manganese into high-value material suitable for lithium-ion battery manufacturing, creating a foundation for downstream industrial participation.
Workforce outcomes have also been measurable. The Energy Storage RDI Flagship Programme has achieved a graduate absorption rate exceeding 70%, with participants securing employment across multiple industries. That figure signals that skills development in battery technology can translate into actual job placement. Scaling such programmes, though, remains a central operational challenge.
Infrastructure and systems integration emerged as equally critical. Professor Muki Moeng, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at Nelson Mandela University, outlined the interconnected delivery requirements plainly. “We need reliable electricity and charging infrastructure. We need batteries and the ability to test, reuse and recycle them. We need people who are trained to work safely with these new technologies,” she said. “We need South African businesses that can develop, manufacture and supply products and services. And we need government, universities and industry to work together to make all of this happen.”
The summit featured working examples of locally engineered electric mobility solutions. On display were the eKamva, South Africa’s first 15-seater electric minibus taxi; the Thula, the country’s first game-viewing vehicle engineered for silent, zero-emission wildlife safaris; and the Microcare Energy electric vehicle charger. These products represent proof of concept for domestic manufacturing capability. Their scaling and market viability, however, depend on sustained infrastructure investment and supply chain coordination that does not yet exist at commercial scale.
By contrast, the data and knowledge-sharing infrastructure needed to coordinate these actors remains fragmented. Chris Joseph Abraham, founder and CEO of Stellenbosch-based engineering consultancy EV-Fleet, identified this directly. “The summit’s objective is to bring together all these organisations to share the data, knowledge and potential partnership to make industry participation possible,” he said. Fragmentation across implementing bodies continues to slow the translation of innovation into coordinated manufacturing and deployment.
Deputy Minister Gina closed with a statement on integration: “We must convert innovation into industrial participation, investment, jobs and inclusive growth. Together, we can accelerate electric mobility, expand local manufacturing, create quality jobs and position South Africa as a leader in Africa’s green industrial revolution.” The language reflects the summit’s core premise, that research outputs and policy frameworks alone are insufficient without functioning manufacturing systems, reliable infrastructure and coordinated workforce development on the ground.
Whether the pilot-scale manganese sulphate production achieved in Limpopo can be replicated at industrial volumes, and whether the 70% graduate absorption rate holds as training programmes expand, will be the practical tests that determine whether South Africa captures value from the transition or watches it pass.
