South African Student Leader Carries DUT's Voice to Global University Sports Forum in Swed

Mongezi Langa, Chairperson of the Durban University of Technology Sports Union, is currently seated at the FISU World Forum in Sweden, representing South Africa through University Sport South Africa (USSA) while carrying DUT’s institutional voice to one of university sport’s most significant international gatherings.

The forum, now underway in Sweden, brings together student leaders and university sport representatives from institutions across the globe. Its program runs under the theme “Healthy Mind, Healthy Body,” positioning sport as a practical vehicle for physical fitness, mental health support, leadership development, inclusion initiatives, and positive campus experiences. The agenda is less ceremonial than operational: delegates engage directly on how sport functions within university systems to advance student wellbeing and development.

Langa holds two leadership roles at DUT simultaneously, serving as Chairperson of the DUT Sports Union and Chairman of DUT Rugby. His academic background is in a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Screen Arts and Technology. He is also an active rugby player himself, a fact that grounds his administrative roles in direct, lived experience of student sport participation.

His presence in Sweden follows a recent appointment to the National Executive Committee of USSA, a progression that expanded his responsibilities well beyond the DUT campus. That national-level appointment came before the forum invitation, each role building incrementally on the last.

What changed with the FISU forum is the scale of the room. Where his DUT positions required managing sport at campus level and his USSA role extended that to national structures, Sweden places him alongside university sport leaders operating across multiple continents. The insights he encounters there are intended to travel back to Durban, informing efforts to strengthen DUT’s sports culture and build a more inclusive, health-focused environment for its student body.

Langa’s roots are in Msinga, a municipality in KwaZulu-Natal province. His path from that starting point through campus leadership, to a national executive committee, to an international forum in Sweden illustrates how student sport structures can function as genuine development pipelines, not simply extracurricular footnotes.

DUT has extended formal wishes for his success as proceedings continue in Sweden. Whether the practices and governance models he encounters at the forum translate into concrete changes at DUT when he returns is the question worth watching.
