Tyla will receive the International Achievement Award at the 32nd South African Music Awards on 15 August 2026 at the Sun City Superbowl, making her only the second artist in the ceremony’s history to earn that distinction twice.
The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) confirmed the honour, which follows Tyla’s first recognition at SAMA30. She now joins Black Coffee as the only artists to have received the International Achievement Award on two separate occasions, a marker of sustained global presence rather than a single breakout moment.
AfriPure, a South African beauty brand, is sponsoring the award. Co-founder Grant Heynes described the alignment as instinctive. “When we were approached with the opportunity to play a part in recognizing Tyla’s global achievement, here at home, it felt like a natural fit for a beauty brand to align with the biggest A-pop star,” he said. Heynes added that Tyla’s trajectory mirrors AfriPure’s own positioning: “an African story, rooted at home, confident in its identity, represents a beauty and capable of commanding a place on the global stage.”
The recognition carries weight beyond the individual. Heynes framed Tyla’s continued international success as evidence of a broader shift in how South African music travels. “Tyla embodies the fearless ambition and creative excellence of a new generation of South African artists,” he said, pointing to her journey as proof of the growing reach of South African culture globally.
Meanwhile, the awards event itself has expanded well past its original function as a music ceremony. SAMA32 now operates as a destination-marketing initiative for the North West Province, positioning the region as a hub for culture, tourism and investment. That ambition is backed by a wide coalition of partners, including the Motsepe Foundation, the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, DEDECT, SA Tourism, SABC, IOL, Great Africa Group, SAMPRA, SAMRO, CAPASSO, RAV, MNM Funerals, Settlers Media and NX.
The economic logic is deliberate. According to Unati Gwija, the event stimulates tourism, supports local economic activity and creates openings for small businesses, creatives, entrepreneurs and the hospitality sector across the region. Drawing established artists, emerging talent, industry figures and music fans from across South Africa and internationally, SAMA32 generates measurable activity well beyond the Superbowl stage.
Tyla’s return to be honoured at home, even as her career operates at a global scale, reflects something the industry is watching closely: whether national recognition retains its pull for artists who no longer need it to build an audience. AfriPure’s decision to attach its name to that moment suggests South African brands see real value in anchoring themselves to global success stories that still claim a local identity.
