South Africa Soccer Star Adams Found Dead at 25; Police Open Probe

Midfielder's sudden death under investigation; circumstances remain unclear

Jayden Adams, the 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, was found dead at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning. South African police have opened an investigation. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

The timing is devastating. Adams had returned from the 2026 World Cup only weeks earlier, where he featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches as the team made history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time. The run ended with a round-of-32 defeat to co-hosts Canada, but not before Adams had played through extraordinary personal grief. He started the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Group A despite learning, hours before kick-off, that his grandmother had died.

His career had been building rapidly. Adams came through Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, and within months he had collected league and African Champions League titles. His international debut came in 2022, and he was part of the South Africa squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations before earning his place in Hugo Broos’ World Cup setup.

Sport, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie was among the first officials to respond publicly. “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said. “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his team-mates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.” McKenzie also appealed for restraint while the investigation proceeds, asking media and the public “to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time.”

The South African Football Players Union described Adams as a “gifted player” and a “proud servant of the game,” saying it was “devastated by the untimely passing” of someone who had represented his country with “pride, courage and distinction.” The union called his death “an immeasurable loss to his family, team-mates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country at large.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino added his condolences from the global stage. “It’s so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign,” Infantino said. “The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed.”

With the police investigation still open and no cause of death confirmed, the full circumstances surrounding Adams’ death remain unknown.
