Soccer defender escapes gunfire in Johannesburg; police investigate attempted murder

Divine Lunga, the 31-year-old Zimbabwe international and Mamelodi Sundowns defender, drove out of a gunfire attack in Johannesburg’s Hillbrow district on Sunday without injury. South African police have opened a case of attempted murder. No arrests have been made.

The attack happened while Lunga and his younger brother were traveling to church through the inner city. An unknown gunman opened fire on their vehicle. Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the shooting but provided limited detail on the investigation’s direction or progress. The Citizen, a South African publication, reported that the suspect may have mistaken Lunga for an undercover police officer, though authorities have not publicly confirmed that account.

Captain Sibeko did not elaborate on investigative timelines, witness accounts, or whether ballistics or vehicle evidence had been recovered. The suspect or suspects remain at large. Police have not disclosed whether the attack was targeted or random, nor released descriptions of the vehicle involved.

Lunga’s profile within the sport is substantial. The defender has earned 21 caps for Zimbabwe’s national team, the Warriors, and featured in the squad for FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches. At club level, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2021. During his time there, the club secured four South African league titles and claimed their second African Champions League trophy in May of this year.

Neither Mamelodi Sundowns nor Zimbabwe’s football federation issued a formal statement following the attack. The Warriors organization did post an image of Lunga in a prayer position on social media, captioned “In God we trust” alongside his name, a public acknowledgment that stopped short of any further commentary.

The incident took place against the backdrop of South Africa’s persistent urban security challenges. The country carries one of the world’s highest murder rates, and violent crime remains a serious concern across major cities.
